Pressestimmen

A stunningly confident first novel with a real sense of period and place . . . thoroughly engrossing (Ian Rankin)Fantastic - vivid, poignant, colourful, and elegantly horrifying (Bridget Collins, author of The Binding)This brilliant literary thriller gripped me from the opening page and didn’t relinquish its hold until I’d read the final sentence. The Doll Factory conjures 1850s London in all its grime and glory, possibility and restriction in absorbing, immersive detail. Elizabeth Macneal has created that rare thing: a beautifully researched historical novel with a plot to stop your heart. If this is her first book, I can barely wait to see what she writes next (Hannah Kent, author of Burial Rites and The Good People)An astonishingly good debut. The Doll Factory reminded me of The Crimson Petal and the White, Fingersmith and Vanity Fair but had a richness of tone that was uniquely its own. Macneal writes with utter mastery, creating a lushly intricate world peopled by living, breathing characters you can’t help but fall in love with and a plot that rattles like a speeding carriage to its thrilling conclusion. I couldn’t put it down. You won’t be able to either (Elizabeth Day, author of The Party)The Doll Factory is brilliant, with a refreshingly original quality, beautifully orchestrated narrative, great characters and some fascinating background detail (Andrew Taylor, No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author of The Ashes of London and The American Boy)I loved The Doll Factory from the very first page and couldn’t do anything else until I’d read right to the end. An exquisite novel of obsession, delusion, resilience and love, Elizabeth Macneal really is a breathtaking new talent (AJ Pearce, author of Dear Mrs Bird)A stunning novel that twines together power, art, and obsession. At every turn expectations are confounded - it’s a historical novel and yet feels incredibly relevant and timely. I loved its warmth, it’s wry humour, and the way each small thread leads into an unbearably tense and chilling denouement that had me totally gripped (Sophie Mackintosh, Man Booker Prize longlisted author of The Water Cure)The Doll Factory is one of the best books I’ve read in ages – heartbreaking and evocative. Elizabeth Macneal draws a vivid picture of life in 1850s London, exploring the world of the pre-Raphaelites and examining the position of women through her unforgettable heroine. At the same time, Elizabeth creates a perfectly structured and page-turning story of love and passion; crime and obsession. A wonderful and intense novel. I loved it. (Jenny Quintana, author of The Missing Girl)A remarkably assured and beautifully written debut, filled with sinister delights and intriguing themes of imprisonment and objectification. A truly captivating read (E C Fremantle, author of The Poison Bed)With strong echoes of John Fowles' The Collector, The Doll Factory is at once a vivid depiction of a morally dubious world, and a page-turning psychological thriller, with a truly compelling villain (Essie Fox, author of The Somnambulist)

I loved this book, but I felt the end was not quite sewn up tight (no pun intended), I wanted more of what happened after the last page. If there was another few pages, of what I wanted to read, I’d have given it a 5. But a 4 it gets as I was not entirely happy with the last page. But it’s a good book, and I enjoyed reading it.

A slow read building to a climatic end

It was a wonderfully written book

The author sets her story in the London of the 1850's. She sets it very well describing the city at that time with both all it's problems and also it's attractions. She does an excellent job of presenting the persona involved with their distinct personalities and their reactions to their own time. The Great Exhibition, a huge hall, is being erected in 1850 in London to showcase as many of the symbols of life at the time, as well as objects that might illustrate the future. Among the exhibitions are portraits done by the artists of the day. The building has an important part to play in the events depicted in the novel. Iris is a young lady that due to her background and lack of money works in a shop making items for the woman in charge. Her sister Rose works with her. As the novel begins Iris goes to the grounds of the Great Exhibition to have a look at this marvel. In passing she bumps into Silas whose forte is obtaining either by purchase or killing: birds and other animals, mounting them and selling them to artists to use as models in their paintings. Iris forgets the encounter, but Silas imagines that she fell in love with him at that moment. Silas is a psychopath with these tendencies beginning during his early life when he fantasized that a girl he knew was secretly in love with him. When she didn't respond to him he lured her away from their area and in a secluded woods killed her. Iris delivers an order from her shop to an artist named Louis Frost. He is struck by her beauty and asks her to model for him. Iris consents but indicates as part of her terms that Louis teach her to paint as well as paying her for the time. The artist later notes that Iris has the talent to become a first class artist, and also falls in love with her; an action reciprocated by her. The novel is dedicated to describing the interactions between the three people. It is extremely well done and while the ending is a direct output of the actions of the characters and not a surprise it provides a good read with the desire instilled to buy more books by Elizabeth Macneal.

The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal a four-star read that will twist you. I will be honest and admit that historical fiction isn’t usually my cup of tea. But I just loved the cover and decided to give it a try and I’m glad I did, it was a compelling mystery that will twist your thinking and have you obsessing over the details as well. When you consider this is a debut novel, the detailing is amazing as sometimes I find in a debut, they take it too far, but Elizabeth Macneal got the balance just right. Silas was weirdly a favourite character of mine, he was a character that made your skin crawl in the best way ever, you just knew that if you were to meet him, that tiny part of your brain that warns of danger would have you crossing the street and staying away, he was that well written you can’t help but know he will stay with you long after you have finished with the words of this novel.
